Painting a room may seem easy – but there is a lot more to it than you realize. In fact before you actually dip your brush into any paint whatsoever, you should first make sure that you have the tools that you need.
Some of the important tools that you should think about getting are:
- Rollers
A paint roller is essential when you want to paint any room. It will cover a much larger area than your typical paintbrush, and allow you to apply a smooth and even coat of paint much more easily. Standard rollers are normally 9-inches, but there are extra-wide and other types of rollers that you may want to look into as well.
- Roller covers
Aside from the rollers you should also make sure that you have roller covers. The covers that you choose should be based on the texture of the surface and the type of paint that you’re using.
- Extension pole and ladders
Odds are you aren’t going to be able to reach all the way to the top of the walls in your rooms – which is why you’ll need an extension pole and ladder. The extension pole can allow you to make longer strokes, while a ladder will let you get up close and paint in the edges.
- Painters tape
Painters tape can help you to protect areas that you don’t want to cover when you paint corners or tight edges. Although technically it is faster to use an angled paintbrush, that does require some skill – and it is better to be safe than sorry.
- 14-in-1 paint multi-tool
As you can imagine from its name, a 14-in-1 paint multi-tool can get a lot done. It is especially useful to remove nails, scrape off paint, create trenches, apply spackle, and even just open paint cans.
- Drop cloths
Don’t underestimate the value of having a few drop cloths around when you paint a room. It is extremely important that you cover any floors or other surfaces that may be exposed to paint with them – otherwise you’ll end up with a ton of work to clear the surfaces up after you’re done painting.
- Sandpaper
If you’re stripping paint or applying spackle you’ll definitely need sandpaper. However even if you’re not you should still keep some around just in case there are any areas that need to be evened out.
Aside from the tools listed above there are lots of others that can help too. A good sprayer, caulk gun, work light, and set of brushes can be very useful in some cases. On top of that paint estimating software such as the one from Stack Construction Technologies can be invaluable as well.
If you take care to choose your tools and are sure to equip yourself well, painting rooms professionally should not be that difficult. Initially it may be a bit tricky to figure out how to make sure the coat is even, but before too long you’ll definitely get the hang of it.
