Character Counter

A character counter counts characters, words, lines, and paragraphs as you type or paste text. Use it to stay within limits for tweets, titles, meta descriptions, and form fields.

What the character counter measures

The tool reads the text in the box and updates the counts on every keystroke. It shows five numbers:

• Characters includes every letter, number, space, and line break.
• Characters (no spaces) removes all spaces and line breaks before counting.
• Words counts groups of characters split by spaces.
• Lines counts each line break as a new line.
• Paragraphs counts blocks of text separated by a blank line.

How to use the counter

1. Type or paste text into the box.
2. Read the live counts under the box.
3. Press the copy icon on any stat to copy just that number.
4. Press Clear to empty the box and reset every count to 0.

Worked examples

The phrase Hello world has 11 characters, 10 characters without spaces, and 2 words. A tweet of 280 characters uses all 280 of the limit. A meta description of 155 characters fits the common search snippet length.

Limits and edge cases

• An empty box shows 0 for every count, not an error.
• Line breaks count as one character each in the character total.
• Words split on whitespace, so rock-n-roll is one word and rock n roll is three.
• Copy writes only the single number on the icon you press.
